| Education for Ministry (EfM) is a four-year study that is an extension course of
the University of the South's School of Theology in Sewanee, Tenn. The course
is conducted in small groups and includes in-depth self-study of the Bible,
historic church documents and a look at theologies through history.
Groups meet once a week to conduct a theological reflection, an exercise in
learning how to problem-solve via theological thinking. For busy folks,
EfM is now offered online with parishioner/mentor, Jo Freeman.
This past season's group included students from around the United
States. The conversations are lively and the group becomes amazingly close
despite communicating solely through Sewanee's online classroom and e-mail.
There is room for new students in Jo's group, which resumes in October, and
other online mentors are also seeking students. Contact Jo Freeman at

| Ballroom Dancing in the Great Hall of ASH happens on certain Saturdays 2:00-5:00 PM each month (check out our calendar included in the Chronicler). Jaynes Dancers provides the music and, if needed, some tips on dance steps. Price is $20 per couple and the price will go down if enough couples participate (right now there’s between five to eight couples attending).
This is a chance to get our bodies moving and dance all the classic steps: waltz, rumba, foxtrot. Although church members are always welcome to join the group, the February 28th “Spring is Coming” event will be made even more special because each couple attending is asked to bring finger food and that will make it delectable and more festive.

| A year ago we began a year of discernment. The financial distress of a mortgage too big for us to carry became a sharp call for us to listen to God and His plans for our ministry. A year later we can now see the fruit of the discernment process: we have heard a renewed call to move forward with our ministry to youth and families. The capital campaign that you’ll be hearing more about has been designed to help us implement that next step. It’s a step that will preserve and build upon ASH as a tool for ministry and make use of it in new, more active ways. And in enacting God’s will, it’s very likely that the parish will grow in the process. As we go about God’s work, God takes care of us.
Speaking of God taking care of us, God has, with each passing day of 2008, prepared the parish to take that next step in ministry. The preparation is very, very visible in the parish’s improved financial position. As I write this, there are two weeks left to go in 2008 and something untoward could happen. Nevertheless, let me stick my neck out and share two predictions of how our parish finances will end the year:
Instead of an $80,000 deficit we will finish this year with a significant surplus.
The 1/1/2009 parish balance sheet will show a large reversal in the steady year-by-year declines in the parish’s net worth that we have seen since 1/1/2006.
These reversals are just amazing. They result from many factors: the inspirational giving of money to the operating budget and to the building fund; the inspirational giving of time, talent and physical assets to raising funds like never before; the sudden opportunity to negotiate the sale of land and easements; the impending reduction in our mortgage payments due to an unprecedented decline in interest rates; the receipt of a diocesan grant of $12,500 to help us reduce our energy costs and another for $2,500 to defray the cost of thrift shop start-up; and last, but not least, smart financial decisions made this year by the Vestry with the assistance of the Finance Commission.
In short, God operated both within and without the parish to open the financial doors through which we walked this year. But then isn’t that just like our God? The One who comes as a thief at an unexpected hour. Not an ordinary thief, however, but One who specializes in breaking into prisons. One who loves stealing the locks off doors, the manacles from every wrist, and all manner of chains and bars. Witness his work: when He’s finished, all that’s left is you, me, a door swinging open in the wind and beyond it the road ahead.

come before his presence with singing.
Know ye that the Lord he is God;
it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves;
we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
Enter into his gates with thanksgiving,
and into his courts with praise;
be thankful unto him, and bless his name.
For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting;
and his truth endureth to all generations.”
Psalm 100

| Check out our new bulletin boards downstairs. We want to celebrate the great things our kids are doing by giving them a place to "Let Our Light Shine".
Kids can fill out a star and place it on the board for all to see. Examples might be "My soccer team won the game! - Steve", "I got an A on a test - Sue".
The other board is a teaching tool to show our kids, 4 years old up through high school, how they could serve the church. Kids see adults serve on Sunday morning, but they may not be aware of the many other things that happen to make our church successful.
Individuals or groups may fill out a card explaining the task, date of completion, and contact information. Students or classes can then pick out a service that they would like to perform. Examples may be: Bake brownies for the Car Show, Make Get Well cards for Shut-ins, Set up chairs for Church dinner. Keep in mind that not all jobs will be selected.
